RCPSC Anesthesiology Examination Board Members

We are seeking two faculty members from the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, University of Toronto, to serve a 2-year term as members of the Anesthesiology Examination Board of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

This is a volunteer position; the department does not provide remuneration.

Required Candidate Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Hold a faculty appointment at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, and be active in clinical academic anesthesia practice.
  • Demonstrate a keen interest in and expertise in assessment activities and competence in evaluating trainee performance.
  • Exhibit high professional standards as an educator, including demonstrating civility, fairness, and non-discrimination towards all trainees.
  • Be certified by the Royal College in Anesthesiology and have been certified and licensed to practice anesthesiology for a minimum of five years. They must also be Fellows of the Royal College in good standing, complying with the Maintenance of Certification Program, and having paid their annual fellowship dues.
  • As a combined English and French Board, bilingualism would be an asset.

Duties of an Examiner

  • Annual participation in structured oral examinations, which includes creating four multiple-choice questions and one oral scenario per exam cycle, editing oral scenarios, and abiding by the code of conduct for examiners
  • This is a volunteer position; the department does not provide remuneration. Requests for academic time are negotiated locally. The RCPSC reimburses travel expenses as per their policies.
  • Appointment to the Examination Board for a 2-year term, renewable twice, to a maximum of six years.

The Application Process

The application package should include:

  1. An up-to-date CV.
  2. A letter of interest explaining the applicant’s interest in the position, including a summary of involvement in the training and assessment of residents and any relevant special interests related to the examinations.

Required information must be submitted by August 12, 2024.

The Selection Process

An independent committee composed of faculty members will assess applications. Please also note:

  • The committee will include at least one junior faculty member and one member who has recently been or remains an examiner.
  • Successful applicants will be notified by email of the decision by the end of August 2024.
  • The names of successful applicants will be sent to the Chair of the Examination Board for consideration and approval.
  • Please note that the proposed candidate must receive final approval from the Chair of the Anesthesia Specialty Committee of the Royal College.

Professorship in Perioperative and Pain Medicine, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the University of Toronto

The Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, is seeking applicants for the inaugural Professorship in Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the University of Toronto.

The successful candidate must hold or be eligible to hold a full-time clinical (MD) appointment within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. The term of the Professorship position is 5 years with the opportunity for one 5-year renewal following a favourable review as per the Policy of Endowed and Limited Term Chairs, Professorships, Distinguished Scholars and Program Initiatives.

Background

HRH's Department of Anesthesia is a diverse and vibrant group of over 40 anesthesiologists. It prides itself on fostering a supportive and collegial environment. Surgical service at HRH include general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, oral maxillofacial, orthopedics, otolaryngology, pediatric, plastic surgery, urology, vascular surgery. HRH operates 19 operating rooms, 5 endoscopy rooms, a labour and delivery unit with 3 operating rooms as well as a 4-bay anesthesia block room. Call coverage consists of two anesthesiologists daily for OR and OB.

Requirements

Candidates must be FRCPC anesthesiologists. No additional fellowship training is required, but additional training in pediatric, thoracic or obstetrical anesthesia would be an asset as well as skills in quality improvement and excellence in teaching medical learners.

In addition to demonstrated clinical excellence and outstanding interpersonal skills, candidates require relevant certification from the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada and are a member of the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario.
