The Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Hany Magdy Youssef.
Dr. Youssef joined the department as an anesthesia resident after graduating from the University of Ottawa’s MD program in 2005. He demonstrated exceptional leadership abilities early in his career. During his time in the residency program, he was elected as a representative of the Professional Association of Interns and Residents of Ontario (PAIRO) for four years. He was also the Toronto Site Chair for PAIRO, organizing and advocating for 3,500 residents over two years.
After completing the anesthesia residency in 2010, Dr. Youssef remained committed to supporting young physicians. He was heavily involved in the department’s planning of the Annual Anesthesia Career Night. Residents could also always rely on him for invaluable advice and guidance.
He joined the Department of Anesthesia at the William Osler Health System in 2011 and served as the Medical Director of the Pre-Operative and Post Anesthetic Care Unit from 2012 to 2016. In that capacity, he led multiple patient safety projects. He also served as President of the hospital's Medical Staff Association.
Dr. Youssef was a beloved colleague who showed tremendous clinical and management skills throughout his career. His clinical interests focused on chronic pain and identifying novel strategies to improve the delivery of care to patients during the perioperative period.
Renowned for his love of colourful clothing, his big heart and a never faltering smile, many of us are very fortunate to have worked with him.
We extend heartfelt condolences to his wife, Dr. Genevieve Denise Dupuis, his children, and his extended family and friends during this difficult time.
