On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine celebrated the graduation of 16 anesthesia residents at the Arcadian Loft. The evening brought together faculty, staff, family and friends to honour the dedication and accomplishments of this exceptional graduating class.
Vice Dean of Medical Education, Dr. Patricia Houston, opened the evening with congratulations to the graduates and formally welcomed them into the University of Toronto alumni community. She was followed by department chair Dr. Beverley Orser, who reflected on the important role the graduates will play in the future of the specialty. “Your training has prepared you to meet the challenges ahead so you can help determine the direction of our specialty for generations to come,” she said.
Program Director Dr. Eric You-Ten recognized each graduate individually, reflecting on their unique contributions to the program and the exciting paths that lie ahead. He encouraged the graduates to carry forward the lessons learned throughout residency and to remain grounded in the values that brought them to the profession. “Always remember the profound impact you have as healthcare professionals,” said Dr. You-Ten. “You save lives, bring comfort to the sick and offer solace in times of great distress. It’s a calling that cannot be expected to be easy.”
A highlight of the evening was the valedictorian address delivered by Dr. Calvin Diep, who shared thoughtful reflections on the experiences, friendships and lessons that defined the class’s residency journey. During his remarks, Dr. Diep invited the entire graduating class to stand and face the audience as he expressed their collective gratitude to the faculty, department leadership and administrative staff whose guidance, mentorship and support helped them reach this important milestone.
The evening concluded with a reception where graduates, faculty, family and friends gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduates. The department proudly welcomes these outstanding physicians into its growing community of alumni and looks forward to following their future achievements.
