Dr. Robert Fowler appointed Interdepartmental Division Director – Critical Care

The Departments of Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, and Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Rob Fowler as the Director of the Interdepartmental Division of Critical Care Medicine for a five-year term, effective July 1, 2025.

Dr. Fowler grew up in New Brunswick, attended McGill medical school, completed internal medicine training at the University of Toronto, a critical care fellowship and graduate training in clinical epidemiology at Stanford University and joined the Departments of Medicine (general internal medicine) and Critical Care Medicine at Sunnybrook Hospital in 2002. Dr. Fowler practices critical care medicine at Sunnybrook where he is the chief of the Tory Trauma Program and H. Barrie Fairley Professor in Critical Care at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Fowler’s clinical and academic focus includes access and outcomes of care for seriously ill patients and infection-related critical illness. He is a past chair of the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group and past director for the Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research graduate training program at the University of Toronto. Dr. Fowler tries to devote a portion of each year to providing clinical care and mentorship in resource challenged settings and has helped lead clinical care and clinical research across a number of global infectious outbreaks including SARS, pandemic influenza, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, COVID-19, Ebola and Marburg virus disease.
