Duminda Wijeysundera
MD, PhD, FRCPC
Dr. Duminda Wijeysundera is Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto, and a Staff Anesthesiologist at St. Michael’s Hospital – Unity Health Toronto. He holds the Elizabeth A. and Richard J. Currie, O.C. Chair in Translational Anesthesia Research and is Chief Scientific Officer of SPHERE (Strategic Partnerships in Health Excellence, Research, and Engagement) at Unity Health Toronto.
He is an internationally recognized clinician-scientist in perioperative medicine. His research focuses on improving the prediction, prevention, and treatment of adverse outcomes following surgery, with particular interests in perioperative complications, poor functional recovery and disability. His research program spans large multicentre prospective cohort studies, randomized controlled trials, population-based research, and implementation of evidence into perioperative care.
Dr. Wijeysundera has published more than 420 peer-reviewed articles and has led or collaborated on major national and international perioperative research programs. His research has been supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, PSI Foundation, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Canadian Anesthesia Research Foundation, Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, and Government of Ontario.
His contributions have been recognized through election as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and as a Member of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada. He serves on the Board of Directors of the International Anesthesia Research Society, is an Associate Editor of Anesthesiology, and serves on the editorial boards of the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia and Circulation.
