Dr. Kyle Kirkham Appointed Chair of the Department Appointments Committee

Dr. Kyle Kirkham

The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Kyle Kirkham as the new Chair of the Department Appointments Committee (DAC), effective August 1, 2025, for a three-year term.

Dr. Kirkham (UHN-Toronto Western Hospital) is an Assistant Professor in the Department. In this new leadership role, he will provide strategic oversight and direction for all matters related to clinical faculty appointments and junior promotions. As Chair of the DAC, he will also serve as a member of the Department’s Executive Council, contributing to broader governance and policy discussions.

Background

An award-winning educator and clinician, Dr. Kirkham’s clinical care at Women’s College Hospital (WCH) and the University Health Network (UHN) focuses on regional anesthesia, optimizing surgical recovery, and improving the preparation of patients undergoing outpatient procedures.

Dr. Kirkham brings valuable experience to this position, as a long-serving member of the DAC and with prior leadership roles as Medical Advisory Committee Chair, Physician Credentialling Lead and Chair of Physician Relationship Management at WCH. His familiarity with physician recruitment, appointment and promotion and his commitment to academic standards will serve the department well.

Vision for the Role

As he begins his term as Chair, Dr. Kirkham brings a collaborative vision to the DAC, emphasizing the importance of the committee’s collective work. He highlights the expanding responsibility of the DAC as the Department welcomes more faculty from both traditional academic centres and expanding community-based sites. “We’ll need to provide education, mentorship, and guidance for new applicants at all of the hospital sites,” he notes, pointing to the DAC’s evolving role in supporting early-career faculty as they begin their academic journeys.

Looking ahead, Dr. Kirkham sees the DAC not only as a body that upholds academic standards, but also as a vital support system for new and prospective faculty members. He is particularly committed to engaging existing faculty across all sites in fostering a strong, inclusive culture of mentorship and guidance.

We would also like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Dr. Carol Loffelmann (Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre) for her thoughtful leadership and dedicated service as outgoing Chair. Her many contributions have been instrumental in supporting faculty development and maintaining the department’s academic standards.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Kirkham on his new appointment and in thanking Dr. Loffelmann for her outstanding service.
