The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine today launched a research initiative designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation. The Anesthesia Research Cluster Grant will provide departmental infrastructural support for research clusters. It aims to stimulate partnerships between clinicians, scientists, and trainees from across UofT and its affiliated hospital sites.

"We believe that by encouraging collaboration and knowledge sharing among our researchers, we can make significant strides in advancing the field of anesthesiology and pain medicine," said Dr. Brian Cuthbertson, vice chair of research and innovation in the department. "This grant is a fantastic opportunity to remove barriers to collaboration and mentorship, and we are excited to see what our researchers will achieve."

The grant, valued at $2500 over three years, will help provide funding for meetings, workshops, and other collaborative activities. The department intends to fund up to six research clusters.

Any scientist or investigator whose primary university affiliation is as a faculty member of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine can apply. Additionally, successful applicants will need to demonstrate that their clusters should:

  • Include scientists, clinicians, and other researchers from multiple sites/departments around the University of Toronto.
  • Meet in person on a quarterly basis (at minimum).
  • Allow established researchers and researchers-in-training to present research in progress to the cluster with constructive peer review.
  • Identify a supervision and mentorship structure for postgraduate trainees.
  • Produce an annual report for the department's newsletter/internal reports.
  • Be willing to present the cluster's work at the department's research events or related rounds.

The deadline to apply for the grant is November 11, 2024. Successful applicants will be informed by December 13, 2024.
