The University Health Network (UHN), Toronto General Hospital (TGH) has the largest Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) programs in the world. Dr. Heggie has been a key member and anesthesia lead of a dedicated multi-disciplinary team that manages the care of this complex patient population since 2000. She has developed a professional collaborative relationship with the Hospital for Sick Children to transition congenital patients from a pediatric to an adult center.
Through her leadership from 2005-2014 in professional innovation and exemplary professional practice, Dr. Heggie has built a sustainable infrastructure for the Toronto General Hospital Department of Anesthesia fellowship programs. This is now the largest anesthesia fellowship program in Canada that has set a national standard in terms of program size and caliber of training.
Under Dr. Heggie’s leadership, the Toronto General Hospital (TGH) cardiac and intensive care fellowship program is now one of the five largest cardiac anesthesia fellowship programs in North America, recruiting a minimum of seven to eight cardiac fellows per year. She developed and introduced the Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiograpy (TEE) reading series for the cardiac and intensive care fellowship program at the Toronto General Hospital. This is now a major component of the fellowship education curriculum.
Dr. Heggie has also introduced three new fellowship programs liver and major surgical oncology, airway and advanced clinical practice. She designed and implemented new curriculum for each specialty, introduced a formal structure to include selection committees, mentoring, daily evaluation and formal feedback sessions.
