We are pleased to share that Dr. Haibo Zhang from the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine has been approved for appointment to the Robert and Dorothy Pitts Chair in Emergency and Acute Care Medicine.
Dr. Haibo Zhang is a Professor of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Medicine, and Physiology at the University of Toronto and a Staff Scientist at the Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science, St. Michael’s Hospital. He was recently appointed as the Robert and Dorothy Pitts Chair in Acute Care and Emergency Medicine, a Hospital-University Endowed Chair, effective January 1, 2025.
Dr. Zhang’s research focuses on advancing translational medicine in critical illness, with a particular emphasis on acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis, COVID-19, bioengineered organ systems, and AI-driven mechanical ventilation strategies. His work has led to significant discoveries in lung injury mechanisms, host-pathogen interactions, and precision medicine approaches for critically ill patients. In recognition of his contributions to health sciences, he was elected as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2017. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals such as Cell, Lancet Respiratory Medicine, Nature Reviews Cancer, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Science Advances, and PNAS, with an H-index of 109 and more than 52,200 citations.
Beyond his research, Dr. Zhang has been a dedicated mentor, training over 120 MSc and PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. He has also contributed to the scientific community through leadership roles, including serving on the Standing Committee of the Critical Care Assembly for the American Thoracic Society and as an Associate Editor for Intensive Care Medicine. He is a sought-after reviewer for international funding agencies, including CIHR, NIH, and European granting bodies.
His appointment as the Robert and Dorothy Pitts Chair reflects his commitment to advancing emergency and acute care medicine through innovation, collaboration, and mentorship.
