The Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine at the University of Toronto bade farewell to a remarkable group of residents during the Anesthesia Graduation ceremony on Tuesday, June 20, 2023. The event marked the culmination of years of rigorous training, dedication, and personal growth for these individuals, who are now poised to embark on their professional journeys.
In her opening remarks, Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Dr. Beverley Orser, expressed her profound pride and admiration for the graduating class.
“In the face of adversity, you exemplified the true spirit of unity, recognizing that we are stronger together. Your unwavering commitment to collaboration and mutual support has been instrumental in overcoming the hurdles presented by this global crisis. The bonds formed and connections strengthened during these challenging times have made our work not only impactful, but deeply meaningful,” she said.
The Program Director of the Anesthesia Postgraduate Program, Dr. Eric You-Ten, also praised the graduates for their resilience and determination.
“You learned that setbacks are not synonymous with defeat but rather opportunities for growth and learning. I want to remind you: always remember the impact you have as healthcare professionals. You save lives, bring comfort to the sick, and offer solace in times of great distress. It is a calling that cannot be expected to be easy.”
In his comments, Associate Director of the Anesthesia Postgraduate Program, Dr. Joseph Fiorellino, shared advice he had received from his mentors at the start of his professional journey.
“Remember that no matter where our careers take us, our goal is to provide the best care for our patients. Our careers are a never-ending path of learning to develop new skills and techniques and stay up-to-date so we can meet our calling.
"In the words of William Osler, the practice of medicine is an art, not a trade, a calling, not a business, a calling in which your heart will be exercised equally with your head.”
Congratulations to the Anesthesia Graduation Class of 2023! Your achievements are a testament to your hard work, resilience, and unwavering dedication. The department wishes you every success as you embark on this noble and fulfilling career.
