Research Synopsis

Currently, Dr. Beheiry’s extensive collaborative research is focused in the area of clinical neuroanethesia.  Studies are being conducted to develop new EEG indices for monitoring anesthetic depth.  Those studies showed that 4 to 12 Hz signal power was important in classifying states during maintenance of anesthesia and increasing the anesthetic depth promoted heightened phase coherence and strong cross-coupling between certain frequencies.  His group also demonstrated that propofol induction of anesthesia significantly reduced the amplitude of the 40-Hz auditory steady state response.  Furthermore, their supplementary research investigated blood conservation in major neurosurgical spine surgeries and neurological complications of regional anesthesia.

Previously, novel experimental research has been performed to answer various questions pertaining to the mechanisms of postoperative cognitive dysfunction and strategies to improve anesthesia recovery profiles.  Dr. Beheiry’s group was able to elucidate important mechanisms of ageing potentiation of volatile anesthetic action that included the increased sensitivity of excitatory synaptic transmission in old animals.
