Dr. Pronovost earned his medical degree from the University of Ottawa (2001), followed by a residency in anesthesia (2006) and critical care fellowship (2008) at the University of Toronto.  He earned a Master in Business Administration from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto in 2005, subsequently completing an administrative residency at St. Michael’s Hospital and becoming accredited through Evidence-based Design Accreditation and Certification (EDAC).

Dr. Pronovost joined St. Michael’s Hospital in 2008, practicing in anesthesia and critical care.  His interests include the application of process improvement methodologies to health care, development of enhanced communication tools in critical care, and the application of evidence-based design in acute health care environments.

Since 2011, Dr. Pronovost has served as chair of the Trauma and Neurosurgery Program Knowledge Translation Committee. This committee provides an interdisciplinary forum which identifies and evaluates new opportunities, and develops pragmatic, implementation-ready strategies for improvement of care.  Recent projects include standardization of daily written documentation with an embedded checklist, and development of a tool to facilitate team-based communication in the resuscitation of patients with a critical neurological injury.

Dr. Pronovost has also been the medical director of trauma and neurosurgical intensive care since 2010.  In this capacity he is responsible oversight of medical management including scheduling, and consistent delivery of a high quality of clinical care in the unit. He is also an active participant in the hospital’s strategic plan, acting as co-lead for one of three working groups under the “Critically Ill Patient” strategic priority.
