Advanced Clinical Practice (MSH)

The Advanced Clinical Practice Fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital offers broad clinical exposure across a diverse range of surgical services and anesthesia locations, including substantial experience in major oncological surgery and high-risk obstetric care. Mount Sinai Hospital is a tertiary academic centre fully affiliated with the University of Toronto.

The program is designed for anesthesiologists seeking to consolidate their clinical skills, develop greater confidence in managing medically complex patients, and gain further experience before entering independent practice or pursuing additional subspecialty training. It may also benefit internationally trained anesthesiologists seeking experience within the Canadian health care system.

Fellowship appointments are for a minimum of 12 months, with usual start dates in February and August.

Clinical Curriculum

Fellows participate in the perioperative care of a diverse and medically complex patient population. Clinical experience encompasses:

• Major oncological surgery
• General surgery
• Orthopedic surgery
• Plastic surgery
• Gynecological surgery
• Urological surgery
• Otolaryngology
• Oral and maxillofacial surgery
• Dentistry
• Ophthalmology

Fellows also provide anesthesia outside the operating room for procedures that may include interventional radiology, electroconvulsive therapy, and cardioversion.

The fellowship emphasizes perioperative assessment, clinical decision-making, effective communication, and the progressive development of the skills required for safe and independent practice.

Call Duties

Fellows participate in an in-house, shift-based call schedule that includes weekday and weekend assignments. Call duties are divided between a dedicated obstetric anesthesia tier on Labour and Delivery and emergency anesthesia coverage in the main operating room.

Education

Fellows participate in departmental educational activities, including clinical skills teaching. They may also contribute to the education of anesthesia residents and medical students.

Research

Research is encouraged but is not a mandatory component of the fellowship. Fellows interested in research may pursue a project under faculty supervision, depending on their interests and the availability of appropriate mentorship.

Research activities may include project development, research ethics submissions, data collection or analysis, and the preparation and presentation of an abstract or manuscript.

Application Requirements and Process

Applicants must meet the clinical fellowship requirements of the University of Toronto and be eligible for registration with Postgraduate Medical Education and for a postgraduate education certificate of registration from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Candidates should have completed the certification examinations required for the specialty of anesthesia in their home jurisdiction.

Applicants who have not been contacted by that time should consider their application unsuccessful.
