New Two Year Joint Clinical and Malignant Hyperthermia Fellowship

The University of Toronto’s Department of Anesthesia is pleased to announce a new 2 year joint clinical and malignant hyperthermia fellowship.

Malignant hyperthermia Investigation Unit (MHIU) at Toronto General Hospital is one of the world pioneer laboratories in MH diagnosis and research. This laboratory has seen and assessed more than 2000 at risk patients over the past 40 years. This laboratory is the only center in Canada offering diagnostic testing for MH.

The fellowship is offered for the first time in the world. Successful candidates will have an opportunity to learn and perform caffeine halothane contracture test (CHCT), genetic testing. The candidate will learn clinical aspects of MH from assessment of at risk individuals to participation in the clinic, and genetic counselling. 
The candidate will also have the opportunity to get familiar with RYR1- related myopathies, and exercise, and heat-induced rhabdomyolysis and the connection with malignant hyperthermia, and participate in research projects involved in physiology and genetics of malignant hyperthermia and related skeletal muscle disorders. The clinical section of the fellowship will be at Toronto General Hospital operating rooms with variety of highly specialized surgeries, where he/she will also do on call duties.
