The support of early-career clinician-scientists is a top priority for our department. We are thrilled that this priority has resonated with two distinguished University of Toronto alumni. Dr. Hal Marryatt is an alum of our post-graduate anesthesia residency training program and a former faculty member in our department. His husband, John Alchin, is also an alum, having completed his undergrad and MBA at the University of Toronto.
I am delighted to share that Hal and John are once again investing in our department by establishing the John Alchin and Hal Marryatt Early Career Professorship in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. This new professorship will be awarded to a faculty member within the first 5 years of their career, and for a 5-year term. The goal of the award is to ensure they have the time and resources necessary to begin and succeed in a career in academic medicine.
This gift builds on their previous generosity and legacy of support, as they had also established the Dr. Alan K. Laws Award in our department.
We will be posting for the position shortly, and I very much look forward to announcing the incumbent shortly thereafter. We invited Hal and John to share a few words with the department about the motivation behind their incredibly generous support.

I hope you will join me in celebrating this great news and thanking Hal and John for their trust and support of our talented emerging scholars.
Sincerely,
Beverley Orser
