Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce Jason T. Maynes PhD MD as the inaugural holder of the Wasser Chair in Anesthesia and Pain Medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children.

Dr. Maynes is based at the Hospital for Sick Children where he is the Director of Research and a staff anesthesiologist in the Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, a clinician-scientist in the Molecular Medicine Program at the Research institute, and is Vice Chief (Research) for Perioperative Services. He is Associate Professor of Anesthesia and is cross-appointed to the Department of Biochemistry, at the University of Toronto. Jason obtained his MD and PhD (Biophysics) from the University of Alberta, and he completed internship and residency in pediatrics and in anesthesia at Washington University, St. Louis, as well as a fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesia at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. He completed postdoctoral training in the University of California – Berkeley, Los Alamos National Weapons Laboratory and Washington University.

His research focuses on new ways to quantify drug action and improve the actions of pain medications and anesthesia. His research in pain includes studies on the effect of pain medications on epigenetics, gene expression and protein folding, and how opiates can affect cancer growth. His lab has developed potential new therapies for heart failure. He holds several patents and his work is funded by the CIHR, NSERC, the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Ontario Research Fund and the Labatt Family Heart Center, as well as by several pharmaceutical and venture capital groups. Dr. Maynes’ overall goal is to align his knowledge as a structural biologist with his clinical practice in anesthesia. The Wasser Chair in Anesthesia and Pain Medicine will enable Jason to lead the way in pediatric anesthesia and pain research.

This endowed Chair was enabled by financial support from Marla and Larry Wasser, members of the Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine at SickKids, and the Department of Anesthesia, University of Toronto.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Maynes and thanking those who contributed to this most important endowed chair.
