Please join us in congratulating Dr. Irene McGhee (Assistant Professor, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre), recipient of the 2016 Mar21pstr.pdfInnovations in Patient Safety Education (IPSE) Award from the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI). The Innovations in Patient Safety Education Award recognizes individuals and organizations that demonstrate best practices in patient safety and quality improvement work using the PSEP – Canada program.
Dr. Irene McGhee is a graduate of the University of Toronto. In the Department of Anesthesia, she has been an engaged educator at the undergraduate & postgraduate levels. More recently, following completion of an education research course at the Wilson Centre, Dr. Mcghee developed a communication tool to improve performance in “transitory” (ad hoc) teams. An AFP research grant to study this tool is underway.
Dr. McGhee has also ben an actively involved in developing the recent CBD curriculum – Advancing Patient Safety in Residency Education – a collaborative initiative led by Drs. Jason Frank (University of Toronto Ottawa) and Brian Wong (Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre).
Dr. McGhee's teaching philosophy is not new – as William Osler said “the secret to care of the patient is caring for the patient”… She would however add, "and caring & connecting meaningfully with those you are working with”.
