Dr Vincent Chan was the 2016 recipient of the American Society for Regional Anesthesia - ASRA Gaston Labat Award. This award recognizes demonstrated outstanding contributions to the development, teaching and practice of regional anesthesia in the tradition of Gaston P. Labat, MD (1843-1908). In receiving the award, Dr Chan presented the 2016 Gaston P. Labat Lecture ‘The Future of Regional Anesthesia’ to a plenary session at last weekend’s international scientific meeting. The award, named after a pioneer in regional anesthesia and one of the founders of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia in 1923, was presented by the society’s president, Dr Oscar De Leon Casasola. Dr Chan is internationally recognized as a pioneer in establishing the practice of ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia in modern medicine. He has received many leading awards in recognition of his work including the Gold Medal of the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society and an honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Anesthetists in England.
