Dr. Matthew Sheppard, incoming Director of the Pain Medicine Sub-Specialty Residency Program

The Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine congratulates Dr. Matthew Sheppard (FRCPC, Anesthesia and Pain Medicine), who takes on the role of Director of the Pain Medicine Sub-Specialty Residency Program on July 1, 2023.

Dr. Sheppard hails from Newfoundland, where he completed his undergraduate studies in French, psychology and medicine at Memorial University. He then studied at the University of Ottawa, completing his residency program in Anesthesia. Dr. Sheppard is also a graduate of the University of Toronto's Interventional Pain Management Fellowship and multi-disciplinary Pain Medicine Sub-Specialty Residency Program.
 
He is the director of the acute pain service at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he works in anesthesia and, of course, acute, chronic and obstetric pain. Throughout his career, Dr. Sheppard has been actively involved with educating medical students, fellows, and staff in areas of pain medicine. He was most recently the site lead for the Wasser Pain Management Centre and the wellness representative for the Pain Medicine Sub-Specialty Residency Program. As program director, he is looking forward to ushering in the Competency By Design curriculum for UofT's prestigious Pain Medicine Sub-Specialty Residency Program.
