Dr. Marcos Silva Restrepo Among Two Sunnybrook physicians awarded Canadian Armed Forces Operational Service Medal- EXPEDITION

Two Sunnybrook physicians Lieutenant-Colonel Dylan Pannell, Department of Surgery and Lieutenant-Colonel Marcos Silva Restrepo, Department of Anesthesiology were recently presented with the Operational Service Medal with EXPEDITION ribbon (OSM-EXP) in recognition of their outstanding service while deployed overseas. The pair were presented with the awards by members of the Canadian Armed Forces during a medal ceremony held in their honour at the hospital.

The Operational Service Medal with EXPEDITION ribbon is presented by the Canadian Armed Forces to service members who provided direct support in a theatre of operations, under potentially dangerous circumstances.

About the Recipients

Lieutenant-Colonel Silva Restrepo is a Medical Specialist with the Canadian Armed Forces, specialized in critical care aeromedical evacuations. He also works as a staff anesthesiologist at Sunnybrook, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine at the University of Toronto's Temerty Faculty of Medicine, and is the Medical Director of the Pediatric Advance Support Program at the Michener Institute.

Lieutenant-Colonel Silva Restrepo has served with the Canadian Armed Forces for over five years and brings a wealth of knowledge and skill as a seasoned anesthesiologist. He received the Operational Service Medal-EXP for his service as part of a small-team medical mission deployed to Africa in 2022.

Lieutenant-Colonel Pannell is also a Medical Specialist in the Canadian Armed Forces as well as an attending trauma surgeon at Sunnybrook and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto's Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

He has served for more than 20 years in the Canadian Armed Forces in diverse roles as a physician, educator, and mentor. He received the Operational Service Medal-EXP for his service as part of a small-team medical mission deployed to Africa in 2023.
