We are delighted to announce that Dr. Karim Ladha has been awarded a prestigious CIHR Project Grant for the Sustained Mood Improvement after Laughing Gas Exposure (SMILE) study. This innovative research project aims to explore the potential of nitrous oxide as a treatment for depression that has not responded to conventional therapies.

Study Details

The SMILE study will be conducted as a multi-centre randomized controlled trial across five sites in Toronto. This comprehensive approach will allow researchers to gather robust data on the efficacy of nitrous oxide in treating treatment-resistant depression.

Collaborative Effort

This study represents an ongoing collaboration between two departments at the University of Toronto:

Together, these departments are working to identify novel therapies for both pain management and mental health conditions. Congratulations to Dr. Ladha and his team on this significant achievement. Their work has the potential to bring new hope to individuals struggling with treatment-resistant depression and contribute valuable insights to the field of mental health research.

Stay tuned for updates on this exciting study as it progresses!
