Appointment of Dr. Keyvan Karkouti, Vice Chair, Innovation and Research
The Departmentof Anesthesia is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Keyvan Karkouti
(Professor, UHN-Toronto General Hospital) as Vice Chair, Innovation and Research – this is a new portfolio at the Department of Anesthesia, University of Toronto, and it replaces the traditional position of Vice Chair, Research. The position is effective October 1, 2016.
Dr. Karkouti trained at the University of Toronto (MD 1990, FRCPC Anesthesia 1995, MSc Epidemiology & Health Care Research 1999). He joined the Department of Anesthesia and Pain Management, University Health Network, Toronto General Hospital in 1996, became a clinician-scientist at the Toronto General Research Institute, and in 2011 was appointed as Deputy Anesthesiologist-in-Chief at Toronto General Hospital. He holds the rank of Professor of Anesthesia and is cross-appointed to the Institute of Health Policy, Management, and Evaluation. Keyvan has made multiple contributions to clinical research, with publications in high impact journals including Circulation, JAMA and Anesthesiology. The recipient of multiple national research awards and substantial industry support, he has served as advisor to several government agencies, including Health Canada and the FDA.
In this new role, Dr. Karkouti will inspire entrepreneurial thinking, innovation and strategy across the four academic domains (research, education/teaching, clinical practice and administration). Together with the Chair, Department of Anesthesia, and the Vice Chairs of Education and Clinical Practice, he will envision, design and oversee major change and growth in academic innovation.
