Dr. Natalie Clavel has been appointed as the new Director for Faculty Development and Professionalism at the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, University of Toronto, effective August 1, 2022.
Dr. Clavel is an assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine at the University of Toronto, where she has had an active role in education since she joined the faculty in 2014. She has been recognized with numerous awards for medical education: 2022 CAS JB Young Educators Award, 2022 Class of 8T9 Medical Alumni Award, 2020 & 2021 Staff Congeniality Award, 2019 University of Toronto Teaching Excellence Award, and 2018 Wightman-Berris Individual UGME Teaching Award.
Dr. Clavel obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Biotechnology from Carleton University (2002), a Medical Degree (2007) and completed her anesthesia residency training at the University of Ottawa (2012). She completed a Master’s in Health Systems Management and Policy Evaluation with IHPME in 2014. In 2015, she was a Certified Health Executive with the Canadian College of Health Leaders. Dr. Clavel current academic focus is on the use of sales and marketing principles in medical education and change leadership.
Dr. Clavel is appointed as the Wightman-Berris Academy Career and Transitions Program Lead for Temerty Medicine. In this role, she creates virtual career exploration experiences for students during COVID and designs a professional skills development curriculum for clerks at Wightman-Berris Academy.
Since 2016, Dr. Clavel has been an integral member of the Ontario Anesthesiologists’ “Beyond the Mask” initiative, where she has led the creation of a continuing education curriculum for leadership development within the profession. She has actively led efforts to improve the physician experience at Toronto Western Hospital. Additionally, she helped facilitate the MD wellness workshop for Faculty Development Day 2021 with Dr. Julie Maggi, Director of Faculty Wellness at Temerty Medicine.
Dr. Clavel is committed to advancing faculty development initiatives and activities for the department with a focus on integrating wellness and professionalism. She will be establishing a Faculty Development Committee which will help build a community of practice around continuing medical education, wellness, and professional development.
