Anesthesia Launches New Innovation in Research Award

If you have a research idea that you would like to develop into a fundable project, and you are a full-time faculty member in the University of Toronto, Department of Anesthesia, you are eligible and encouraged to apply for this award.

To apply, please submit your CV and a 1 page (max.!) statement by Dec 1, 2016, covering:

  1. The idea (What is the study question or hypothesis?)
  2. The opportunity (Why is the idea important?)
  3. The methods (How are you going to answer the question?)
  4. The impact (What is the significance or anticipated benefits to people and/or health care system?)

This award is ideal for early to mid-career investigators planning a clinical study – but, submissions will be welcomed from any faculty proposing a study in any area.

Submissions will be reviewed and the winners will be chosen by an expert committee per the following criteria (adopted from CIHR):

  • Originality of the proposal: Potential for creation of new knowledge; Novelty of research question/technology/methodology; and, Novel application or adaptation of technology/methodology.
  • Research approach: Clarity of the question; Appropriateness of the design.
  • Applicant: Experience and expertise of the applicant; Appropriateness of the team.
  • Environment for research: Availability and accessibility of personnel, facilities and infrastructure required to conduct the research.
  • Impact of research: Proposal addresses a significant need in health research or health care system; and, Potential for a significant contribution to people’s health or benefits to the health care system.
  • Impact of award: Potential for addressing the identified gaps in the proposal within the allotted time.

Award winners will agree to undergo an intensive, mentored grant preparation (supported by departmental resources where needed) for submission to CIHR in 2017.  Any project that ultimately leads to a successful CIHR ‘Project Grant’ will also automatically receive a ‘Merit Award for Innovation’ ($30,000) for the duration of the CIHR Project Grant.
