With great pleasure and pride, we extend our warmest congratulations to the outstanding individuals who were honoured with awards at the recent 2023 Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society (CAS) Annual General Meeting. Our department has received a remarkable total of nine awards, including four Research Awards and five Honour Awards, at the CAS meeting.
We express our sincere appreciation for your hard work, passion, and unwavering dedication to advancing the field of anesthesiology. Your accomplishments serve as an inspiration to us all and reinforce our department's reputation for excellence.

Dr. Peter Slinger received the Gold Medal.
The Gold Medal is the highest award of the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society. It is an inscribed medal given in recognition of excellence in a career in service to anesthesiology.
Dr. Vincent Chan received the Emeritus Award!
This award is given to a current member of CAS in any category who has been a member of the Society for 25 years or more.
Dr. Ki Jinn Chin received the Research Recognition Award!
This award is presented by the CAS to honour a senior investigator who has made major contributions to anesthesia research in Canada.
Dr. Lakshmikumar Venkat Raghavan received the Clinical Practitioner Award!
This award is given in recognition of excellence in clinical anesthesia practice.
Dr. Jane Heggie received the CAS Humanitarian Award!
This award is given in recognition of excellence in global anesthesiology.
Dr. Karim Ladha received the Career Scientist Award for his research titled, "No Laughing Matter: The Use of Anesthetics to Treat Depression."
Dr. Ahtsham Niazi received the Section for Education and Simulation in Anesthesia Research Grant for his research titled, "Remote Immersive Virtual Reality (RIVR) Teaching: Use in Ultrasound Guided Regional Anesthesia Procedural Skills Acquisition."
Dr. Katherine Taylor received the Dr. R A Gordon Research Award for her research titled, "Artificial Intelligence-Based Automated Cardiac Function Prediction for Anesthesiologists".
Dr. Sabine Nabecker was the winner of the Richard Knill Competition for her research titled, "Breaking the Silo and learning from our colleagues - Evaluation of peer observation and feedback for continuous professional development for staff anesthesiologists– a mixed method study."
Dr. Calvin Diep's presentation was named the best abstract in the perioperative category for his research titled, "Symptoms of anxiety and depression after major elective non-cardiac surgery: a secondary analysis of the Measurements of Exercise Tolerance before Surgery multicenter prospective cohort study."
Dr. Diep was also awarded the CAS Residents’ Research Grant for his research titled, "The impact of major postoperative complications on patient employment and earnings after elective surgery: a retrospective, population-based cohort study."
Dr. Yeshith Rai's presentation titled, "The use of psychedelics for pain: a scoping review," was named the best abstract in the chronic pain category.
Dr. Robert D'Cruz took first place in the Medical Student Prize for his submission titled, "The translational research bridge and why Anesthesiologists are positioned to close the gap."
