Message from the Chief Diversity Officer
The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Toronto is dedicated to transformative social change and in creating an equitable, diverse, and inclusive culture. The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine has instituted a chief diversity officer (CDO) whose role is to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives. The CDO’s integration within the departmental structure has been published within the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia, “Leading progress: The Role of the Chief Diversity Officer in Anesthesiology Departments.”
EDI have recently gained traction in Medicine, especially regarding gender inequities. However, these inequities are being expressed as gender binaries (i.e., men or women). Gender binaries homogenize all women’s experiences, negating people who do not identify within the binary classification. The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine is interested in creating an inclusive environment for all people, including but not limited to social identities including gender, sexual orientation, race, ability, religion/spiritual orientation, socioeconomic status, indigenous people, etc… in hopes of diminishing discrimination at personal and systemic levels.
