Davy Cheng

Dr. Cheng received an Ontario Scholar Award into University and completed his BSc (Hon) in Biochemistry at the University of Ottawa in 1977 (Dean’s Honor List). He was awarded Medical Research Council Studentship entering graduate school and completed MSc (Biochemistry) at Western University in 1979. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine (with an Honor Award from the Medical Society), University of Toronto in 1983 and completed his internal medicine internship and anesthesia residency in 1987. He joined as Faculty at the Toronto Western Hospital, University of Toronto after a Clinical Research Fellowship in 1988 and a Cardiovascular Anesthesia Fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City in 1989. Prior to his appointment in 2001 at Western University, London, Dr. Cheng held the rank of Full Professor and Deputy Chief of Anesthesiology at the Toronto General Hospital, University of Toronto and as Medical Director, Cardiovascular Surgery Program, University Health Network (UHN), Toronto. Professor Davy Cheng is the Founding Dean of Medicine and Presidential Chair Professor, School of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, China beginning in July 1st, 2021. Prior, he was a Distinguished University Professor and Acting Dean in Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University at London, Ontario, Canada. He held the Chair in Evidence-based Perioperative Clinical Outcomes Research (EPiCOR) and is the co-founder and Medical Director of the MEDICI Centre (Medical Evidence, Decision Integrity & Clinical Impact), which was a World Health Organization (WHO) designated Collaborating Center in the study of global perioperative surgery and anesthesia care. Dr. Cheng was an Attending Consultant in the Critical Care Medicine Division, Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine, and the Department of Medicine, Western University. He was also cross appointed as Professor in the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics, Western University. Professor Cheng is now appointed as Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at the Western University; and Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto, Canada.
Research Synopsis
Prof. Cheng is a globally recognized healthcare leader in the forefront of research, practice and healthcare policy in the fields of perioperative surgical and anesthesia care, cardiac surgery, critical care medicine, and evidence-based clinical decision-making. His pioneer work in fast track cardiac anesthesia and recovery has become the standard of cardiac anesthesia and recovery practice around the world. Prof. Cheng established the EvidenceBased Perioperative Clinical Outcomes Research (EPiCOR) and the MEDICI Centre (Medical Evidence, Decision Integrity, Clinical Impact) at Western University and the London Teaching Hospitals; and continues to release a number of pivotal publications and consensus guidelines to direct evidencebased medical and surgical practices. In 2016, the MEDICI Centre was recognized and granted as a WHO Collaborating Centre in studying perioperative surgical care and anesthesia. As Principal Investigator or co-investigator since faculty appointment, Prof. Cheng has been awarded over $13.5M total in peer-reviewed grants and over $1.6M total in non-peer reviewed grants. He has published over 160 peer-reviewed scientific papers in high impact journals and 60 books / chapters (citations 12,646, h-index 58, i10-index 138). Prof. Cheng served on several Editorial Boards including anesthesia (CJA), cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesia (JCTVA) and cardiac surgery (INNOVATIONS). He Co-Chaired the Steering Committee and Expert Consensus Panel for the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (ISMICS), the European Association of Cardiothoracic Society (EACTS), as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) in practice guideline development. Prof. Cheng has been invited as visiting professor, named lecturer and guest speaker to over 160 Universities, Cardiac Centers and nationally/internationally conferences.
