Dr. Avila's research interests include diagnostic and interventional radiofrequency treatment of spinal pain  syndromes including thoracic spine, sacroiliac joint complex pain disorders and intracranial hypotension. His team has published abstracts and review articles and conducting workshops in these areas at local provincial, national and international levels. They have been an integral part of the Canadian Interventional Pain Medicine annual workshops program since its initiation at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Dr. Avila has also been a reviewer for the spine section of the Journal Pain Medicine, official journal of the the American Board , American Academy of Pain Medicine, Australian and Asian Society of Pain Medicine. He is currently a proud member of the standard of practice, evidence committee of the International Society of Interventional Pain Medicine (ISIS), the most scientifically recognized society in academic pain medicine. Over the last ten years he has been honored to lead the chronic pain lecture series for the PGY 3 anesthesia residents at the University of Toronto.
