Clinical Curriculum

This is a 6- to 12-month fellowship offered to Anesthesiologists who are interested in comprehensive pain management. The candidate will work in the Transitional Pain Service Clinic, MSK clinics, and the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Program. These are multidisciplinary clinics that involve various specialties: Anesthesiologists, Psychologists, specialists in Addiction Medicine, Neurologists, Physiotherapists, Geneticists, Social Workers and Nurse Practitioners. The fellow will spend 4 days per week performing clinical duties, which may or may not include working in the operating room one day/week. There are also rotations that include: 1) Cancer non-palliative pain service; 2) Addiction Medicine; 3) Physiatry; 4) Interventional Chronic Pain Program (various anesthetic blocks, including fluoroscopy and ultrasound-guided techniques); 5) Psychologists-Psychiatrists; 6) Palliative Program; and 7) Rehabilitation Program (functional Restoration Program and Cognitive Behaviour Program).

Call Duties

Fellows may participate in general emergency on-call duties in the operating room at a frequency of approximately 3–4 calls per month and/or weekend pain calls.

Research

There are numerous research projects conducted by the faculty within the many disciplines. The fellows are expected to be involved in at least one research project during their annual rotation. They are also expected to present at least one topic during one of the educational rounds.

Education

The Transitional Pain Service Clinic is a hub of the Toronto Academic Medicine Institute and is affiliated with the University of Toronto's Centre for Study of Pain (UTCSP). There are various educational programs, including the rounds for the UTCSP and weekly educational rounds in Pain Medicine by the UHN staff and faculty associated with the Division of Pain Medicine.
