Frequently Asked Questions
What is accreditation?
In Canada, post graduate medical programs typically undergo an accreditation process every six years. The accreditation process is conducted by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, which is the national organization responsible for accrediting post graduate medical education programs.
What does the accreditation process involve?
The accreditation process involves a comprehensive review of the program's curriculum, teaching and assessment methods, faculty qualifications, resident learning environment, and other aspects of the program. The accreditation process’ goal is to ensure that the program meets the Royal College's standards for post graduate medical education, and that it is providing residents with the knowledge, skills, and competencies they need to become competent and effective physicians.
Why is accreditation important?
The accreditation program helps post graduate medical programs ensure that they are providing residents with the education and training they need to become competent and effective physicians, and to promote continuous improvement in post graduate medical education.
What impact will the notice to withdraw accreditation have on my education?
The notification of intent to withdraw accreditation typically means that the RCPSC has identified areas of concern within the program, and that the program has failed to address these concerns in a timely or effective manner. If these concerns are left unaddressed, the program is at risk of losing its accreditation status.
However, the program is also allowed an opportunity to respond to the RCPSC’s concerns and to demonstrate that it is taking appropriate steps to address these issues. The program may be required to develop and implement a remediation plan and may be subject to additional monitoring and review by the RCPSC.
The anesthesia residency program has made significant strides towards addressing the identified areas of improvement.
What is the role of residents in the accreditation process?
Residents are incredibly important stakeholders throughout the accreditation process. Residents help provide valuable feedback and input on the quality of post graduate medical programs. This feedback is used by the accreditation team to ensure that programs are meeting the needs of residents and providing high-quality education and training.
What are the areas for improvement in the anesthesia residency program?
The 2020 reviewers identified the program's many strengths, including the excellent work of the Program Director, educational leaders, curriculum and the many innovations. However, there were also four areas for improvement, specifically:
- Supervision in the operating rooms and clinics
- Faculty evaluation and teaching performance accountability
- Harassment and incivility in the learning environment
- Improved intraoperative teaching
