Eligibility and Awards

Investigators studying in all areas of research including pre-clinical sciences, clinical research, education- and quality assurance-related research are welcome to apply.

At least one award has been allocated for education-related research , although all aplicants will be considered for all of the awards. To foster evolving areas within the specialty, one additional award will be offered for Safety and Quality Improvement Project. 

The condition of each applicant must be:

  1. A member of the conforming practice plan
  2. Have a full-time clinical academic appointment to the University of Toronto

  • Excellence in Research Award and Merit Award are open for both experienced and early investigators.
  • Early investigators are defined as candidates who apply within the first 5 years of their initial appointment on September 28, 2018. The date of appointment will be defined as the date on their letter of appointment to the university. Include your appointment date in your CV if you wish to be considered for an Early Investigator Award.
  • Formal periods of leave will be considered in determining the 5-year period for Early Investigator Awards.
  • Awards are intended to support non-clinical research time or salary support for high-potential trainees who are supervised by faculty members (e.g. graduate students, postdoctoral fellows). Ineligible expenses include research operating expenses, technician and research associate salaries and travel expenses.
  • Awards will be assigned for a 2-year period from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2020 and will be prorated and paid retroactively to July 1, 2018.
  • A billing agreement will be issued to the Hospital Department Chiefs that outlines the procedure to transfer funds from the university to practice plans on a quarterly basis.
  • Hospital Department Chiefs and awardees will provide a written confirmation of the appropriate use of funds as a component of the annual progress report.
  • Progress Report – on an annual basis from the start date of the award.
  • In the case of a justified leave of absence, the Award will be put on hold and will resume at the end of the leave.
