2015 Interprofessional Teaching Award

Fiona Campbell - Interprofessional Teaching Award 2015By its very nature anesthesiology is a field that benefits tremendously from the cooperative efforts of a number of practitioners from many different areas of medicine. In recognition of those who have made significant contributions to teaching both within and outside of the anesthesia community, the Department of Anesthesia has established the Interprofessional Teaching Award. Nominees for the award have typically demonstrated an impact on interprofessional teaching in the past three years. The department is honored to have presented the 2015 Interprofessional Teaching Award to Dr. Fiona Campbell.

Since joining the Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children in 2003, Dr. Campbell has become a local and international leader in the development of interprofessional medical education. As a member of the Interfaculty Pain Curriculum Management Committee, the Pain Awareness Week Planning Committee, and the Pain Centre Crosstalks Planning Committee, Dr. Campbell has formally demonstrated her commitment to anesthesia education beyond the confines of the department. In addition to her extensive committee work, Dr. Campbell has served as the medical lead in the development of an opioid module as well as an online pediatric pain curriculum that have been mandated by six different health sciences faculties (Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy).

Dr. Campbell’s expertise in pediatric pain management has been sought after by a wide number of audiences, including the Faculty of Nursing, the Department of Dentistry, the Department of Plastic Surgery, the Department of Cardiology, and the Department of Interventional Radiology. She has given presentations at conferences both nationally and internationally to medical practitioners and the lay public alike and has co-authored over 25 peer reviewed articles as well as numerous clinical care guidelines. Through research and education Dr. Campbell has enabled substantial improvements in clinical care as well as an increased recognition of the importance of translation in pain research.

The Department of Anesthesiology is pleased to recognize the numerous efforts in interprofessional education made by Dr. Campbell with the 2015 Interprofessional Teaching Award. Her tireless work has benefitted not just her colleagues but also the many medical professionals outside of the department, which has, in turn, improved the overall health care of her patients.
