2015 David Fear Award

Dr. Tobias EverettThe David Fear Award was established by the Department of Anesthesia in 2007 to recognize Dr. David Fear’s commitment to continuing medical education throughout his career. After his time practicing anesthesia in Peterborough for just over a decade, Dr. Fear moved to the Hospital for Sick Children in 1985 where he served as the director of Pain Management. As an advocate of Continuing Education (CE) programs, Dr. Fear worked tirelessly to promote CE initiatives and was recognized by many as outstanding practitioner, teacher, and role model for students and colleagues. The David Fear Award pays tribute to Dr. Fear’s effort each year by recognizing those who demonstrate an outstanding contribution to continuing medical education and professional development in the department.

Dr. Tobias Everett has been selected as the recipient of the 2015 David Fear Award for his service to CE initiatives and professional development. Joining the Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children in 2012, Dr. Everett has become internationally recognized as a leader in simulation-based medical education. Dr. Everett has collaborated with colleagues from across the globe to secure peer reviewed grants for further research in simulation-based CE and has lectured and published extensively on the roles of simulation-based medical education in CE and professional development.

Dr. Everett’s efforts in simulation-based medical education include but are not limited to: appointment as course director for a new multimodal training course at SickKids, Interprofessional Sedation Education, which has been copyrighted and commercialized; the monthly administration of simulation-based team-training curriculum for medical professionals both within and outside of anesthesia; the delivery of outreach accredited anesthesia CE simulation sessions to interprofessional groups at multiple sites; and serving as a debriefer for the Simulation Team Training and Critical Event Checklist, a CE program to optimize management of critical perioperative events in an ambulatory surgical facility.

Since arriving in Toronto rom the United Kingdom, Dr. Everett has received a number of awards in recognition of his commitment to medical training, including the Robert Crieghton Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching (2012 and 2013), the New Faculty Teaching Award (2013), and the Interprofessional Teaching Award (2014). The Department of Anesthesia is pleased to add the 2015 David Fear Award to Dr. Everett’s list of achievements.
