TGH - Advanced Airway Management

Clinical Curriculum

The focus of the program is acquiring and demonstrating expertise in airway evaluation and management alternatives, eventually serving as a departmental resource to assist in the teaching and management of difficult airways. An endoscopic training and certification program is currently being developed and will be continually refined and extended to include other alternative airway modalities.

The specific devices will vary from time-to-time but they will include a variety of supraglottic airways, fiberoptic and video laryngoscopes. At present, these include igel, AirQ, LMA-Supreme, LMA-ProSeal, Intubating-LMA, LMA-Classic and LMA-Unique, GlideScope, McGrath, EVO, Bullard, WuScope, Shikani, Levitan FPS and Airtraq. There is also emphasis on extubation of the difficult airway using tube exchangers, supraglottic airways and airway assessment prior to awakening.

Fellows participate in the out-patient Head and Neck Clinic assessing airways, mastering endoscopic techniques and observing the outcome of complex reconstructions. Approximately 100 major head and neck procedures, 50 laryngectomies and/or pharyngectomies, several tracheal resections, retrosternal thyroidectomies, laser airway surgery, panendoscopies, awake tracheotomies, neck dissections and major reconstructions are performed each year

Call duties

Fellows are assigned to weekend OR call (one weekend every four weeks) and two to three weekdays per month. The on call starts at 08:00 with the next day off.

Education Curriculum

The fellow is also expected to participate in research and education. There will be opportunities to join existing research projects, initiate new ones and to present findings at local, national and international meetings. Tuesday weekly fellows rounds at 17:00 are mandatory and one day each month is dedicated to an airway topic.

Research

Research is integrated into the fellowship with an average of one academic day per week throughout the year. Academic days can be clustered to accommodate research projects and presentation preparation.

Applications and Enquires

The fellowship is aimed at anesthesiologist in their early professional career. Interested applicants need to have successfully completed all the required anesthesia examinations, be registered with the official regulatory authorities and have at least 5 years of anesthesia training and experience at an academic centre. (1 of the 5 years may include a rotational year, also known as an internship, houseman year and medical officer year)

A current and valid ACLS certification is a requirement.
