Clinical Curriculum

The one year clinical fellowship is designed so that fellows become well-versed in all aspects of ambulatory surgical and anesthetic care. Fellows will be exposed to a wide range of day surgery cases. The specialties include general surgery, plastics, urology, orthopaedics, neurosurgery and spine surgery. The exposure allows the fellow to acquire experience and expertise in preoperative evaluation, cardiac and pulmonary risk assessment and reduction, difficult airway management including the usage of alternative devices such as the intubating laryngeal mask, bronchoscope, and video laryngoscope. Fellows will learn regional anesthesia for ambulatory surgery, and perioperative smoking cessation. Dr. Mandeep Singh is dual certified in sleep medicine and anesthesia as part of the perioperative fellowship.

Call Duties

Fellows will participate in general emergency on-call duties at a frequency of approximately 4-5 calls per month.  


The program offers research opportunities in outpatient anesthesia, pharmacology, physiology,airway, blood coagulation and sleep apnea. Fellows will have the opportunity to work with one or more of the following staff: Dr. Frances Chung, who is the leading expert in obstructive sleep apnea, ambulatory anesthesia and perioperative medicine; Dr.  David Wong who is an expert in airway management and perioperative medicine; and Dr. Jean Wong who is an expert in blood conservation, systematic review and meta-analysis. Participation in clinical research projects will promote learning in study design, statistics, writing and publications. Fellows can also present findings at local, national and international meetings. 


Regular education sessions on research methodology and aspects of perioperative medicine will be held at the departmental level throughout the year. Fellows are expected to contribute to these rounds to gain experience in teaching and presentation. Fellows will also be expected to attend or present at one or more of the following meetings: ASA, CAS, IARS, Society of Ambulatory Anesthesia.
