Dr. Beverley Orser appointed Officer of the Order of Canada
The Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine is proud to celebrate the appointment of Department Chair, Dr. Beverley Orser, as an Officer of the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours.
In announcing the honour, the Governor General’s Office cited Dr. Orser as “a leading anesthesiologist, neuroscientist and University of Toronto professor internationally recognized for defining anesthesia’s molecular mechanisms.” Her groundbreaking discoveries have transformed our understanding of how anesthetic drugs influence memory, consciousness and brain function, while her leadership and advocacy have advanced patient safety practices around the world.
The Order of Canada recognizes individuals whose achievements and service have made an exceptional and lasting impact on Canada. Established in 1967, it remains one of the nation’s most prestigious honours.
Reflecting on the recognition, Dr. Orser emphasized the collaborative nature of the work that led to the appointment, expressing gratitude to her colleagues, mentors, collaborators and family for their support throughout her career.
“Her discoveries have transformed our understanding of how anesthetic drugs influence memory, consciousness and brain function,” noted the Governor General’s Office in its citation recognizing Dr. Orser’s contributions to science and medicine.
Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Orser has combined excellence in research, clinical care, education and leadership. As Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, and as an anesthesiologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, she has championed innovation, mentorship and scientific discovery while helping shape the future of anesthesiology in Canada and internationally.
